AFRICA Reinsurance Corporation (Africa Re) has launched a young insurance professionals’ programme (YIPP) to attract new talent and encourage young people to have a long career in insurance. Launched in Accra, Ghana, during the 45th Conference and General Assembly of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO), Africa Re Chief Executive Officer, Mr Corneille Karekezi, said exposure to professional training would help boost expertise across the industry.

He said companies have been quick to cut training budgets but the continent struggles with a dearth of young people ready to develop into the leaders of the future. He stated: “Training is not a priority.

When you look at all your costs as an insurer, training is something you can    put aside. When you want to cut costs, companies always go to education.”

He said companies have jumped at the opportunities offered by this programme. Karekezi said, “When I was a young insurer, I was offered the opportunity for training. It boosted my career and I have never forgotten the experience.

That is what we want to do now. It is a Foundation so other people can contribute. It is not just about Africa Re.” According to Karekezi, “YIPP is another milestone in the corporate social responsibility initiatives of Africa Re, in line with its mission of fostering the development of the insurance and reinsurance industry in Africa.”
